Mountain Dew Citrus Blast

Not to be confused with Citrus Charge.

Mountain Dew Citrus Blast (formerly known as Mountain Dew Energy) is the version of Mountain Dew found in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands, South Africa, Norway, Sweden, and Iceland. It is the same as the version of original Mountain Dew sold in other EU countries, with only the name being different.

Description[]

As mentioned previously, Mountain Dew Citrus Blast uses the same formula of Mountain Dew used in other European countries. It is similar to that of original American Mountain Dew, and thus is similar in color and flavor to it. However, the formula is modified, including the use of natural sugars instead of high-fructose corn syrup (similar to Real Sugar).

From 2019 onwards, some countries replaced the current formula with the one used for All Dew - No Sugar, while in Nordic regions, some of the sugar was replaced with Acesulfame Potassium and Sucralose.

History[]

United Kingdom[]

Original[]

In February 1996, Pepsi-Cola International Britvic Soft Drinks, the UK and Irish license holders for Pepsi soft drinks, released Mountain Dew in the United Kingdom. The United Kingdom used the existing international branding for the drink, with the slogan "Wild Colour, Smooth Taste", as well as a formula with less caffeine than the US variety.

However, the drink would become a flop, with Britvic discontinuing the multipacks and 2 liter bottles by January 1997. Diet Mountain Dew was introduced the following year.

By 1998, both varieties were discontinued due a lack of demand as further sales decreased.

Mountain Dew Energy[]

In April 2010, PepsiCo and Britvic announced to reintroduce Mountain Dew to the UK as Mountain Dew Energy. This version used a variant of the existing European formula with a higher caffeine count than the US version, and would be introduced by May.

It was initially sold in 500ml bottles, before expanding to 440ml cans and 1 liter bottles in Early-2011, alongside the addition of a Diet version called "Sugar Free Mountain Dew - Get Energized" that was also sold in 440ml cans.

In 2012, a Halo 4 promotion brought along a limited edition flavor - Game Fuel, featuring a Citrus-Raspberry taste.

In 2013, Sugar Free Mountain Dew was given a wide release in 500ml and 1 liter bottles.

In 2014, the "Energy" wording was removed in the United Kingdom and Ireland, simply calling it "Mountain Dew" there.

It was later reformulated and renamed to "Mountain Dew Citrus Blast" in 2015. The reformulation removes some of the caffeine, and gives it a different aftertaste than the EU formula, with this, the 440ml cans were replaced with standard 330ml cans.

Other regions[]

In the same year a similar product, "Mountain Dew Electric Citrus," was released in Spain.

The name was also used for Mountain Dew in South Africa, The Netherlands, and Denmark, but they all use the standard EU formula.

When Mountain Dew in Europe received the new designs in 2017, Citrus Blast was released in Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, and Iceland. It sported the new designs and replaced the original flavor in those countries.

Trivia[]

  • This is only one of many attempts of a Mountain Dew energy drink (see "related flavors" in the infobox). This form of marketing was dropped in favor of it being sold as a soda, rather than an energy drink.
  • Although originally marketed as an energy drink, Mountain Dew Citrus Blast is, as previously mentioned, now sold as a regular soda. Despite this, some retailers still sell it as an energy drink.
