This drink itself is a reference back to Mountain Dew creators Barney and Ally Hartman, who had a special malt mix of their drink that they only made for special occasions. The name "Johnson City Gold" refers to the town Mountain Dew was first bottled in.
In December 2011, Dew Labs members were asked to partake in a poll to decide the name and design of the next Dew flavor. In July 2012, Mountain Dew revealed the flavor the world as "Johnson City Gold", stating that it would be released for a testing period through August.
Later, on August 9th, the Regional Dew promotion was launched through its website, which gives fans the ability to design and name the Malt-flavored Dew based on 1 of 6 U.S. regions. The flavor will eventually be released using the most popular fan-created designs, using a different name and design depending on the region.
Mountain Dew Johnson City Gold is a nonalcoholic malt/lemon-lime flavored soda, and is pale green in color.
